Portsmouth of English Football League 1, have completed the signing of Sean Raggett from Championship side Norwich City on a season long loan
Raggett, bolsters up, Pompey manager Kenny Jacketts defensive options ahead of the new season, which begins on 3rd August, when Pompey travel to Shrewsbury Town
So, who is Sean Raggett?
He is a 25 year old defender, who was born in Gillingham, and started his football career with his home town club in their academy, but couldn’t make the breakthrough with the Gills and so, aged 16 moved on to Dover Athletic
He made 150 appearance for Dover, before moving onto Sittingbourne on a dual registration basis
However it was at Dover, under the guidance of Chris Kinnear ( brother of the former Wimbledon Manager Joe) that Raggett learned his trade and turned into an uncompromising defender, who began scoring trade mark headed goals
It was this type of performance at Dover which earned him a move to Lincoln City, where he became a mainstay of their side, and shot to fame, with this goal away at Burnley in The 2017 FA Cup. Lincoln at the time, were still a non league team and this victory, created history, because it was the first time a non league team had reached the FA CUP quarter finals in 103 years
His performances for Lincoln, earned him a move to Norwich City, where is viewed as an integral part of their squad and is on a 3 year contract.
However Kenny Jackett has been monitoring his performances for some time and when the opportunity to take him on loan arose, Jackett decided to make his move
Below you hear from Raggett himself on his own story and why he chose Portsmouth at this stage of his career
With his signing, it gives Portsmouth a bit more solidity at the back following the departure to Brighton recently of the equally uncompromising Matt Clarke
Portsmouth assistant manager Joe Gallen, had already stated, prior to Raggetts arrival that Pompey needed to shore up a defence which was the 6th Best in League 1 last season and perhaps a big factor in why they failed to get promoted
With the addtion of Raggett, who joins James Bolton from Shrewsbury as a replacement for Nathan Thompson, its clear that Pompey feel they now have a defence which will be improved on from last season
One thing is clear that the performances of Raggett, will play a major part in that
